My answer to What should I do to be more creative in CAD?
Answer by Scott Tarcy:
My advice is to design a product that is significantly different that what you have traditionally designed.
For example, my background has mostly been in plastic part design. I have gotten a few sheet metal projects but assigned those to my employees as I didn’t have as much experience as them in sheet metal and I was busy with other projects.
However, I decided that it would be good for me to expand my skill so on my last few sheet metal projects I went ahead and did the design work myself. I learned some valuable skills using the sheet metal commands in Solidworks. One example: do not use ellipses when defining the curves of a sheet metal part. It will not unfold.
Hope that helps.
